Abstract

Agricultural Research Station Swabi is working for the development of wheat crop and released its 1st wheat variety “Swabi 1” for cultivation in irrigated areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in particular and Pakistan in general in 2021. International Wheat and Maize Improvement Center (CIMMYT), developed the line with the parentage ND643/2*WBLL1/4/WHEAR/KUKUNA/3/C80.1/3*BATAVIA//2*WBLL1 and was tested in the HYT-27 during 2015–2016 as an entry at Agricultural Research Station Swabi. After a series of trials at the farm of Agricultural Research Station Swabi and across location, the line proved itself superior to the checks. This line was tested in 15 yield trials in Preliminary and Advanced Yield Trials, Microplot Wheat Yield Trials, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Wheat Yield Trials and National Uniform Wheat Yield Trials (2015-2020). On the average “Swabi 1” gave 8.92% (5083.3 kg ha1), 22.66% (6153.6 kg ha1), 6.86% (4808.9 kg ha1) and 16.7% (4808.9 kg ha1) higher yield than local checks i.e. Pirsabak-2013 (4666.7 kg ha1), Shahkar-2013 (5016.7 kg ha1), Wadan-2017 (4500 kg ha1) and Piesabak-2015 (4120.7 kg ha1) respectively. Swabi 1 exhibits resistance to stripe and leaf rust and showed excellent physical and chemical proprieties. BNS and pre basic seed production was taken up in 2021-22. The variety “Swabi 1” will adds to the diversity of germplasm and cultivars available and will bring a significant yield improvement.
